Praia a Mare is situated on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, not far from Maratea and the Gulf of Policastro. Its history is strictly connected with the marvellous cave of mount Vingiolo, which dominates the village where the homo sapiens settled and lived for millennia. Later on, following the legendary arrival of a wooden statue representing the Virgin with Child, the cave became a sanctuary, and is today a place of pilgrimage. With its promenade running along a large stretch of sand, with the Dino island, rich in caves, and with its unmatched beauties of nature, Praia is one of the best-known tourist centres in Calabria.
